Legenda Pulau Sikantan
(Regional folklore from North Sumatra)
Once upon a time there was an old widow who lived in a hut by the river in Labuhan Batu, North Sumatra. He lives with his only child, Kantan. They look for firewood in the forest to meet their daily needs. The result is partly used alone, and the rest is sold in the next market.
His life was so normal that one night the widow dreamed that an old man came to her and advised her to dig somewhere in the middle of the forest. The dream seemed to come true, as soon as he woke up, he took Kanta to the place the old man had shown him.
When he reached the middle of the forest, he ordered Kantana to dig the ground under a large tree. Shortly after the excavation, Kantan finds an object wrapped in a white cloth. Wasting no time, the package was opened and revealed to be a jeweled golden scepter.
After the gold bar is removed and cleaned, it is again wrapped in cloth and taken home. In the evening, Swarnali discussed what to do with his staff. The mother wants the gold to be sold so that they can live decently for the rest of their lives.
However, the situation of the inhabitants of the villages, where most of them are engaged in the same livelihood, i.e. agriculture, is doubtful. There is nothing to buy potential kisses. Ma offered to sell Kanta to Malacca, where most of the population was known to be wealthy.
Kantan said goodbye in the morning. Before leaving, Ma suggested that Canton return immediately after the gold bar was sold. When he brought sacks full of money from Goldstab's sale, he worried for Kantan's safety.
Malacca's glory is far away. Boarding a small boat, he sailed for several days in the Kantian Sea. But determined to change his fate, he finally reaches the port of Malacca and meets the commander of the security force.
The Hulubalang state looked at Kantan like a hook, confused and didn't know where he was going, then he came and asked the purpose of coming to Malacca. Kantan showed his golden staff wrapped in cloth and replied that he would sell it to the richest man in Malacca.
The richest man in the land of Malacca is of course the king. Hulubalang then took Kanta to the king's palace. He showed the goods sold there and the king was interested. In addition, the golden scepter encrusted with diamonds so impressed him that His Highness offered his only daughter to be Kantha's wife in case Kantha wanted to transfer ownership of the golden scepter to her.
The offer must have been very attractive to Canton. Although she does not receive direct money, she has a beautiful daughter, which is impossible only when she is the child of a poor widow. And if he is the husband of the princess, one day the kingdom will be his. He also agreed to the king's proposal.
Shortly after receiving the golden scepter, the king married his daughter to Kantan. The wedding was held in great pomp and all the royal people and nobles of the surrounding kingdoms were invited. From that moment, Kanta's life changed one hundred and eighty degrees. When the golden scepter changed hands, he forgot the news that his mother was coming home immediately.
So day after day passed with rich wealth, until one day the woman wanted to meet her mother-in-law. Kanta's appeal was initially rejected. Kantan was afraid that seeing his mother's condition would surprise his wife and make him regret marrying her. But when he pushed further, Kantan finally followed him. Kantan thought that mother was gone because it had been many years since she was gone.
A week later they moved to the opposite island. Using a luxury boat equipped with dozens of bodyguards, the princess carries all sorts of items to give to her son-in-law. I did not see the mother-in-law status at all. For him, mothers-in-law are people who should be respected regardless of their position in society.
On the other hand, Catan gets heartbroken during the cruise. He hoped that he would not be reunited with his mother to keep his soul alive. But when the boat reached the mouth of the Barumun river, the hope was dashed. Many people came to admire the magnificence of the boat. One in the crowd was a mother hoping the magnificent boat would carry her only child.
Passenger figures can be seen leaning against the boat. One of them is Kantan, who looks luxurious like a rich nobleman. Seeing her son's return, the mother called out his name. In fact, he went to the boat ladder to go on deck while calling his son's name.
Frightened, Ma mobilizes the guards to chase Kantan's wife away as she climbs onto the deck. Shortly after the mother was cast out, Cantan ordered the captain to drop anchor and return to the open sea.
Kanta's actions seem to be forbidden by his mother. He did not expect his beloved son to be disobedient and unfaithful to him. Heartbroken, he knelt down and prayed to God that the child would be taught the same lesson as what was done to him.
After the prayer, the sky suddenly darkened, followed by lightning and a very strong storm. A few minutes later, the waters of the Barum River rose and rolled over Kantan's boat, which was about to go out to sea, drowning the entire crew, including Kantan and his wife.
The next day, a small island appears where the ship sank. The locals called the island Sikantan. Currently, the middle island of Sikantan is covered with bushes and coconut trees. Meanwhile, the fringes are full of mangroves, home to a variety of fish.
